Typhoon Club | Debating Courses

The objective of the Debating Course will be to provide students with a solid background of the elements that make a good debater. At the end of the course, each student should understand how to:

1) Prepare for a public debate;
2) Identify the primary and secondary points of their argument;
3) Be able to anticipate rebuttals;
4) Present their case;
5) Identify weaknesses in their opponents' argument;
6) Prepare a winning conclusion;
7) Develop confidence in their public speaking abilities

There will be ten lessons that follow this schedule:

Lesson 1 General background on the art of debating and to address how the students would tackle debating topics
Lesson 2
- Brainstorming definitions and identifying primary and secondary arguments;
- The pooling of ideas;
- Research;
- Developing a structure

How to plan your case;
Preparing your speech

Lesson 4 Identifying weaknesses in your argument
Lesson 5 Manner: how to engage your audience
Lesson 6
- How to summarise your argument effectively;
- Clarifying issues
Lesson 7 Reviewing selected arguments
Lesson 8 Students will be required to present an argument and rebuttal
Lesson 9 & 10 (combined, double lesson) Winners selected from lesson 8 will be required to debate in front of their class and to be judged by an outside adjudicator

Implementation

1)

Typhoon Club will implement Debating programme to S6 students.

2) There will be 20 students per class.
3) There will be ten lessons in the course. Each lesson will last 45 minutes.
4)

The lessons will be implemented by a native English teacher.

5) Your school English teachers are encouraged to attend lessons with a view to assessment and personal development.

Assessment and Evaluation

Before the final lesson, students will be asked to complete a questionnaire which will help define their views and reactions to the Typhoon Club Schools. This, together with a short report and evaluation from the Typhoon Club teacher will be submitted to the school once the course has been concluded.

Native English Teacher

The course will be implemented by a native English teacher under the supervision of Typhoon Club's publisher, Mr Mark Cowley. Mark was the co-creator of Typhoon Club and its Writing School and has considerable experience of implementing courses for schools in Hong Kong. He is also experienced in debating having gained a UK law degree and spent one year at the Inner Temple and Council of Legal Education.
